I the amount of @replies you get, doesn't necessarily mean people are paying attention to you. I would argue that it's an iffy metric, especially if you consider influence. If your well known in a community, or nitch, not every single person is going to Like, @reply or comment back. They might see your status update on Facebook, think, "cool," and move on. Later that week, you might bump into someone at the bar and they say, "Hey, I saw your status update," etc.
What I've found to be really powerful is numbers. For example, if you have multiple people on a social network ranting and raving about the next big event, they'll get all there friends out.
Great point. Playing devil's advocate though, I would point out that there are some great uses for Twitter even when you're not active... research, news, etc.
Unfortunately, I think Twitter is partially a numbers game for no apparent reasons other than the fact that you have the potential to maybe get your message in front of more people if you have more followers, but honestly, when it comes to having a bazillion followers who don't pay attention to you, it's kind of like just broadcasting a TV commercial and hoping that it sticks with someone, right?
Agreed 100% you are right 1 true follower that replies and clicks your links is worth a 100 followers. Followers who are following too many people ( more than 150) are a lot less valuable because they won't notice your tweets (unless they use group features (tweetdeck, seesmic desktop) but it is hard to make it into those groups ) I like to have followers who: -live in my city -have common interests it makes it lot easier to engage with them
Hey Derek, Thanks for the info about Twitter. I was just talking by phone with Michelle M.'s Mom and we were trying to piece together what twitter is all about. Then up pops your video as we were talking. It's hard for us dinosaurs to keep up. Deborah ps I bought my dress for the wedding this weekend.
